Breath of Life

Did you know that just by doing simple breathing exercises you can promote weight loss? There have been many studies conducted about weight loss and breathing. They conclude that by practicing deep breathing exercises you may decrease anxiety levels, improve your mental sharpness and improve your sleep quality. All of these go hand-in-hand with your calorie restricted eating plan, drinking more water and detoxing your body from toxins stored in your fat cells.

An interesting report published in the British Medical Journal found that as your body expels the used fat from your body 84% of it is breathed out and only 16% is expelled as water (urine, sweat, tears). This explains why as people are losing weight that their breath can be very unpleasant. With that in mind, as you try some of these breathing exercises, you may want to keep some zero calories breath mints going for others around you. :)

  • Deep breathing. This form of breathing exercise involves taking a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds, and then releasing it slowly.

  • Alternate nostril breathing. With this exercise, you practice inhaling and exhaling through alternating nostrils by using your fingers to close one side at a time.

  • Pursed lip breathing. This type of breathing practice involves inhaling through your nostrils and exhaling slowly through pursed lips.

  • Diaphragmatic breathing. Also known as belly breathing, this variation requires you to lie down, place your hands on your upper chest and rib cage, and exhale through pursed lips as you tighten your stomach muscles.

  • Senobi. This Japanese style of deep breathing involves leaning back, stretching your arms overhead, and inhaling and exhaling slowly several times.

All of these breathing exercises involve paying close attention to your breathing to promote relaxation. Incorporating these into your TRIP while meditating on God's Word and listening for the Holy Spirit's guidance will help you to keep your focus on God and His plan for your complete health.
