I Know I Don’t Know

I enjoy learning new things that I'm interested in and I do not like discovering that I was wrong on what I thought I knew. As I have studied the Bible over the past several years, I have learned so many things about God, the people, and events He has recorded in His Word and about myself. The personal response I have had in these learnings has exposed my heart and my will to trust in God, the world or myself.

In all these learnings a constant truth is that I do not know it all. None of us do. Only God who is above all, outside of time and has created and sustains everything knows everything. With that understanding, the question for you and me is whether we trust God and rely on His knowledge that has no limits or on our finite knowledge.

The Bible records King Solomon as the wisest person to ever live. At the very beginning of his rule as king, he asked God to give him wisdom and knowledge so that he could govern His people. Notice that King Solomon's request came as he realized that he was lacking and needed only what God could provide. He humbled himself and did not trust in his own knowledge.

As we live and learn may we also follow this example that King Solomon records for us in Proverbs 3:5 NIV, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;"

GOD IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE

We cannot completely understand God’s thoughts and ways. God is infinite and eternal; He has no beginning and no end. He has perfect knowledge of all things. God made human beings in His image; however, we are finite and have been flawed by sin. Once we are in heaven, we will be perfect. Even then though, we will still be finite and not know all there is to know about God. Today and forever we only understand all we need to know about God as He has given us information and experiences through His Word and His Spirit.

Psalm 145:3 NIV

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.

Isaiah 55:8-11 NIV

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is My Word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

Job 42:1-3 NIV

Then Job replied to the Lord: "I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. You asked, 'Who is this that obscures My plans without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know."
