Do You Need a Happy Meal?

There has been research conducted that has found a connection between obesity and depression. This connection can be mild up to severe. Studies show that this connection of obesity and depression occurs when a lower level of serotonins are found in the brain. These low levels lead to a lack of motivation, sadness, anxiety and depression. Once in this mental state, often we turn to food to give us a boost and to make us feel better.

Fast food companies have seized this opportunity to give you a "happy fix" and have made their meals addictive by adding extra sugars and salts so that you will come back for more and more! Instead of staying in this unhealthy cycle, let's make healthy choices for our mind and body with these foods that can boost your serotonin levels:

  • Eggs

  • Cheese

  • Pineapples

  • Tofu

  • Salmon

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Turkey

  • Gut-healthy foods: high-fiber and probiotics

In addition to these foods, you can add exercise and time spent in sunshine to increase your serotonin levels. So, let's get out into the sunshine and take a walk. Be mindful of emotions and make healthy choices to benefit your mind and body every day!
