Attributes of God

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities - His eternal power and devine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

What are the Attributes of God?

The Bible, God’s Word, tells us what God is like and what He is not like.

Is God a person?

Yes, God is a person, but He is not a human being as most of us would assume a "person" to be. By "person," we mean that God is a self-aware rational Being with a personality. Some theologians have defined personhood as "an individual being with a mind, emotions, and a will." In this case, God is definitely a person. The Bible gives us examples of His mind: "How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep!" (Psalm 92:5). It gives us examples of His emotions (Psalm 78:40; 103:8; 135:14) and His will (1 Corinthians 1:1). The personhood of mankind is not doubted, and because we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27), it makes sense that He is also a person.

Why Did Our Savior Also Need to Be God?

David Wright, AiG–U.S., explains why only God could have been the Savior of mankind.

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

(Isaiah 9:6)

If Jesus was fully human, why did He also need to be fully God? Although we needed a blood relative to redeem us, we also needed God.

What does it mean that God is good?

Jesus declared, “No one is good—except God alone” (Luke 18:19). First John 1:5 tells us that “God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” To say that God is good means that God always acts in accordance to what is right, true, and good. Goodness is part of God’s nature, and He cannot contradict His nature. Holiness and righteousness are part of God’s nature; He cannot do anything that is unholy or unrighteous. God is the standard of all that is good.

“The Lord Will Provide”: Why is God Called Jehovah Jireh in the Bible?

“Provision” isn’t a word most Americans think much about. It’s a weightless word to us. We may use it euphemistically when we stock up on “provisions” for a road trip, meaning Twizzlers and combos. We may use it to refer to unexpected upgrades in life – “The Lord provided us with a new car” or “The Lord provided our church with the means to get that new sound system.” Some of us remember times when God provided for needs in obvious ways like a check in the mail to cover rent or the generosity of a friend to pay for a hospital bill. We recognize these as God’s provision, but we rarely depend on provision.

How God is Both Incomprehensible and Knowable at the Same Time

The Incomprehensibility of God

Scripture teaches that we can have a true and personal knowledge of God, but this does not mean we will ever understand him exhaustively. The Bible is clear that God is ultimately incomprehensible to us; that is, we can never fully comprehend his whole being. The following passages show this:

Is There Anything Too Hard for God?

Every Christian at one point or another in their walk with Christ will encounter the suspicions of a non-believer. They will hear the questions of the doubtful who wonder whether the God we worship is as powerful as we claim He is, as His Word says He is. Ever examine the followers of religions? Ever listen to the conviction with which they defend their religion? We are meant to have the same conviction accompanied by love proving nothing is too hard for an omnipotent God.

How do God’s mercy and justice work together in salvation?

God’s justice and mercy are seemingly incompatible. After all, justice involves the dispensing of deserved punishment for wrongdoing, and mercy is all about pardon and compassion for an offender. However, these two attributes of God do in fact form a unity within His character.
